SMART GOALS

This past class session we discussed and reviewed motivation and I asked you all to recall a moment during the past week in which you were pressed to get something done and had to find the motivation to move forward with task completion...thank you to those of you who shared your insights!

The topic of the week was goal setting and we specifically discussed the idea of SMART GOALS. If you recall, I share that in order for a goal to be more likely to be accomplished the following should be true about the goals you set for yourself:

S = Specific: The goal outlines the what, where, why, who, when, etc...of what you want to accomplish

M = Measurable: If you can't measure the goal, how will you know that you have accomplished the goal?

A = Achievable: It is important to only set goals for yourself of which you have the capacity and control to accomplish at this point in your life

R = Relevant: If the goal has no meaning for you at this time in your life, then you are not likely to stick with it.

T = Timebound: All SMART goals must have a specificed timeframe in which you plan to reach your goal.

For this week's blog entry I ask that you do the following and write it as a comment in response to this blog entry:

§  Write out three academically focused SMART Goals that you wish to accomplish this semester.
§  Why did you choose these goals and why are they important to you?
§  What are some obstacles you can anticipate encountering this semester that might stand in the way of achieving these goals?

Your blog entry response is due by 11:59PM on Sunday, February 19, 2012.

  1. Blog entry #3:
Goal #1: To not procrastinate on my homework.
Goal #2: To take advantage of the services AAU offers.
    Goal #3: To get a B average.
The reason why I picked these three goals for myself is because I feel they are definitely SMART and will make me form better study habits and become a more successful and proactive student. Not procrastinating when it comes to doing homework is for sure my first step. I am already getting in the grove of doing it that day right when I get home so I will no longer have to worry about it for the rest of the week and have my mind at ease. Second actually using the labs and library and student services that our school offers will motivate me to spend more time at school and help me keep my priorities in line as well as help assure academic success. My third goal to obtain a B average I feel is a 100% reachable goal that I owe to myself to at least average out with. If i get a B average or higher than it shows that I actually took the time to do my best work and prove to myself I can be a successful student.
I know and already am prepared to face many obstacles this semester. First and for most balancing my work schedule with my school schedule I have a very demanding job and a lot responsibility to manage and it some times interferes with my schooling. Also I moved out of downtown to park merced so the daily commute may get in the way of me being in class on time. Even though I have a couple things in the way I know that with proper time managing I will be able to reach my goals.

  2. 1. Show up to class on time
    2. remain focus
    3. go to workshops
I've chosen these goals because there are some things that I have often struggled with. The only thing would be my social life these semester I have met a lot more people and that can be distracting.

  3. my Academic SMART GOALS are
    1. Pass my classes either it be a B or C(kinda lowered my Standards there) XD
    2. not be late to class
    3. go to ARC and Workshops
i chose these goals because i know these are what will lead me to succeed this semester i still party a lot on WEEKENDS but i know i can get the work done and im not struggling i have a set time schedule to do homework so theres no distractions during the week i get the work done to at least the minimum of a B or C, the only obstacle in myself which is not to get the work done but if i keep the way im going i can get my work done

  4. Goal #1:
I want to get a GPA of or above 3.0.
This goal is very important to me because this shows that if I tried my best then I will succeed and have a much higher confidence of what I can achieve. This goal may be vague but this is extremely important because I would not only like to shine creatively but academically as well. The obstacles would be procrastinating, getting distracting while doing work or not doing anything about a lesson I did not understand.

    Goal #2:
I want be on time for all my classes and not miss any classes without a legit reason. I travel from Dublin so getting to BART on time as well as checking the bus schedules to get to class on time is a very important part of any academic career. All of my teachers do deduct points for being tardy and I wish to not lose any grade points over something I could have had control over. Obstacles for this would be laziness. I tend to think that I have more time than what I may really have. I manage to somehow make it to class barely on time but that is something I would love to change. Coming to class a little earlier than the start of the class will make the day run smoother. As my sister's band teacher says: "Early is on time, on time is late, and late is rude". This quote is my motivation to get to classes on time.

    Goal# 3:
To balance out my school life as well as life at home.
I am a classical Indian dancer so practicing is very important in retaining the stamina and remembering the dance routines. Last semester due to being overwhelmed by a job, college, relationship and dance classes; I was totally thrown off. Practicing dance no longer had room in my schedule so I had to quit the classes for the semester. This is a brand new semester with better priorities, and I wish to make time for practicing dance at least 6 hours a week. The only obstacle I can think of is me becoming too tired or lazy during the week to get up and practice. Homework takes a while to do for most classes, so after a while of working, I'm sure anyone would rather take the time to relax instead of an intense practice of 1 to 2 hours.

  5. 1. To finish all my work on time.
    2. To get B's or higher in all of my classes.
    3. To go out and beyond my way to stay ahead of the game.

I chose these three goals because school is a very important, if not the most important aspect of my life right now. I did not try this hard to just fail half way, I am going to give it all I got and more. These three specific goals are important because they are part of the foundation that will help me improve to be a better me. A stronger me you could say.
There are going to be many obstacles standing in my way but like before, I will surpass them with ease. Procrastination is a big obstacle everyone has to overcome, as well as laziness. Balancing my work schedule won't be an easy task considering that I am not exactly sure how much work I will be getting a certain week but I am motivated to get it all done and turned in on time.

  6. 1.Finish all assignments on time
2.Remain focused despite my social life
    3.Strictly A's and B's

These three goals are important to me because I've struggled with these problems throughout my years of school. I want to make goals like these a reality in my life and I think its time for a major change. My biggest problem is procrastination and that effects every goal listed. The only other obstacle that can hinder my goals this semester is my social life. I'm tired of having to rush and complete things a the last minute because of poor decisions.

  7. 1.Get better grades than i got last semester (shouldnt be hard to do, they were very low)
    2. Spend less time on social aspects of my life (video games, girlfriend, friends) and focus more on getting my work in on time.
    3. make a rewards system for myself to get me more motivated to do my work.
I chose these goals because in the past, I wasnt very motivated to do my work, as I am distracted very easily and I would really like to change that. I know it will take a lot of willpower but I think i can do it.

  8. 1. Attend every classes.
    2. Do all the assignments, and projects.
    3. Good grades with good works.

I chose these goals because a day after Valentine's day, I told myself, no matter what I'll make it to class and turn in my work. But I happened to woke up late and missed the class. but later I found out the class was canceled. I was lucky but it sure hit me that missing class feels horrible. You feel like you are behind and you have extra work to catch up on. since after that feeling, I'm never going to miss classes again.
I always procrastinate but I'm going to finish all my work and turn it in at the right time even if I'll have to spend the whole night. you may procrastinate at that time but the next day at school, you're full with regrets and shame.
I see people doing all good works with their skills and it made me want to have a passion for art and grow my skills. I'm going to work hard and actually care about my works rather than just getting good grades.

  9. Three Goals to Attain (by the end of this semester):

    1. I will get at least an A- in each of my four courses.
Although a direct motivation for this would be getting off of AP, this is more a test of my will and self-discipline. It has been a long time since I have militantly applied myself to any school related endeavor, and I want to know that I still have the ability to reign myself in and be completely serious -while still enjoying what I do.

    2. I will create 15 song projects in both Logic and ProTools (30 songs total), either from in-class projects, homework, or work done on my own time for my own development.
Why? I don't just want to be passing my music editing classes, but keeping ahead of them and building up a library of material that I created personally. This material can always be used in later classes or even later in my career.

    3. I will be able to READ if not play Rachmaninov's Sonata in G Minor for Piano and Cello, Op.19- Allegro scherzando.
This has to do with my music theory class. I have never been able to read music notes with the ease that I would prefer, so playing music from books has always been a problem for me. I try to play by ear, but Rachmaninov's music is harder to dissect simply by listening to it. By the end of my music theory class this semester, I hope to apply what I've learned to understanding this particular song, because I want to incorporate it's style into my own even if I don't end up playing classical music for a living. I can measure my success by seeing if I can slowly play the notes out on piano without first listening to the song.

Obstacles to face. 1: Not doing exactly what I'm told. Sometimes I get so excited about a project and things that I want to do with it that I forget the exact parameters set on the project by the teacher. I want to be a ahead of the class, but I have to remember to do precisely what I am asked as well. I have been watching myself more closely and taking note of EVERYTHING said in class.
2: Losing the will to work. This has been a problem in the past, but I'm certain that now I've switched into music full time I won't find it hard to get excited about what I'm doing. I have the opposite problem now really: I get restless when I can't play an instrument, sing, or work with the DAWs (Digital Audio Workstation). I think my drive comes from seeing all the not too far off possibilities regarding what I can do with my music once I create it. I constantly think of ways I can show off things I've discovered, and I love to lecture to family and friends back home about what I'm doing.

  10. 1) Time out my projects
    2) Pass all courses with an A or B
    3) Bring my own creative perspective into my assignments

All of my goals are interrelated. In order to bring my personalized creativity into my projects I need to time them out to sustain that I have sufficient time to finish each of them. If I succeed with this the concepts and execution of my assignments will be worthy of an A or B. It is because of this that these goals are important to me. Namely because i want to bring my creativity to design and to do that properly I need to thrive on all levels of being a student.

The one and omnipresent obstacle that I may need to face again is my issue of being self destructive and falling into old habits of laziness and having socially driven desires.

  11. 1. Finish the semester with a GPA of 3.5 or above
    2. Show up to all of my classes on time
    3. Get an internship at a game studio

The main thing I'm focusing on this semester is getting my grades up, showing that I care about my work, and getting more involved in my field. The problem was I didn't take my first semester seriously enough and it showed in my assignments and my constant late attendances. The two obstacles that I need to improve on this semester is staying organized with due dates and when I have the time to complete work. I tend to procrastinate a lot plus choosing to hang out with my friends over getting work done first.

  12. 1. I will learn to better manage my time.
    2. I will get an "A" In at least three of my courses, and a minimum of a "B" in my fourth class.
3.I will raise my GPA not only out of AP, but to a Minimum of a "B" average.

I chose these specific goals because I feel that they are very important to me personally. They are necessary goals for me to complete before I feel that I can move on in my life, both in and out of school. Managing my time has always been an issue for me, and now more so then ever before, as I have more to manage at AAU then I ever have before in my life, both in and out of my classes. It is very important to me to get myself out of Academic Probation, namely because I put myself here; and I feel that I owe it to myself to not only get out of AP, but to raise the bar on my own expectations, and move up and beyond what I previously thought I could do.

I foresee a number of obstacles in my future regarding these goals. I feel the main obstacle is that I can at times have trouble keeping myself focused on what is important. I can very easily distract myself from work, only when I am completely focused and 100% into what I am doing do I feel that I can complete and assignment to the best of my ability. With my goal set of 3 nothing but A's and B's, I know for a fact that it will be extremely important for me to produce only my best work.

  13. hi sorry, our dorms internet was down and i was at work all day.
    1. my goal is to at least get a 3.5 or higher this semester
    2. turn in every assignment with work that shows how much i can really do. and not something i just did to turn in.
    3. raise my gpa to not only get out of AP, but to overall raise it to at least a 3.5.

i choose these goals because these were some of my goals that i had for myself coming to this school in the first place. i got a little off track last semester, nothing crazy. but this semester is gonna be different. and with these goals, i will make this semester my best semester in the 2.5 years of college that i have been going. these goals are not only important to me, but they are important to my parents and my two sisters. all throughout my life, i didn't always have it the easiest. I've had to overcome a lot of things within school my last year in hs. but they were always there for me. and this is important to me because i know no matter what happens, they will always be there for me. but this would make them very happy. and proud. and thats something i always look forward to hearing from them.

my main obstacles to achieving these goals would have to be my time management. wether its planning my days to work on my other classes, and go into labs, and also working 5-6 days a week. and I'm human, i need to go out, take a breather from school. I'm still young. but it will be hard juggling everything, especially because this semester, one of my classes has a big work load. and its not gonna be completely easy to make sure I'm at the top of everything. but i will. and i will see to that.

  14. sorry for the late work.
    1. Get at least B- for this semester.
    2. attend class everyday.
    3. do assignments on time.

I chose these 3 goals because these are the most important things that I should focus on. Last semester, I thought I played too much and not focusing on class works. After that, I realized that I haven't spent much time on assignments so I decided to work really hard to get best grades I could get. Also, I sometimes overslept which I missed the morning classes so I will try to sleep earlier so that I could wake up early to go to the class on time.

The obstacle that I need to improve is the laziness. I get to sleep a lot and playing computer. However, from this semester I will have to go to school for workshops to finish my works earlier and try to finish homeworks on the day it was given. Then I don't need to struggle at the last minutes and that also make it lazy to finish the homework. I promised with myself that I will get good grade this semester.

  15. Public speaking is not the easiest thing to do, a lot of what we learned is more common sense than we think.(1,2) It really just applies to confidence and preparation. The more confident you are about your speaking, and as long as you are well prepared you will do fine. One thing I learned is that the presentation shouldn't really pertain to the speaker, it should be more focused towards the crowd, they are an audience, and audiences like to hear what they want, so if you keep it simple enough for them to enjoy, they will be more focused on whatever the topic may be.
(3)I used to struggle with public speaking, but as I got older, I realized that there is really nothing to worry about. I started doing more research as well as mingling everywhere, no matter who it was I liked to introduce myself and talk to new people, I figured it helped with speaking and my confidence. I guess the premise of this is, people will be people, we are all different in many ways, when you speak, speak as if you are trying to be friendly with the audience, like you know them.
    (4) The activity i found the most interesting was the random photo, even though i couldn't think of what to say, I still went up like I knew what I was going to say then it just hit me and I went along with whatever came to my mind.
