This week's class session on time managment and procrastination seemed to garner a great deal of interest. Most of you, since the first time we met as a class, as well as in your previous blog entries, have mentioned that your biggest challenge or obstacle to finding academic success is an inability to manage your time effectively or that you simply procrastinate TOO much.
Hopefully, since we met on Tuesday, many of you have begun to reflect on our class discussion and are being more mindful of how exactly you do spend your time on a daily basis. Additionally, an aspect of this week's homework requires that you chart where you spend your time...
So...where are you spending your time...and do you feel good about how much time you are allocating to everything you need to do on a daily/weekly basis?
For this week's blog entry, please respond/comment on the following:
1. Are you spending the most time during the week on things that are important to you? What is most important to you? Why is it important to spend time on this?
2. Does where you spend the majority of your time help you to accomplish your goals? Both your short term and long term?
3. Are there things that you can cut out of your schedule that you would consider time wasters? What are some things you have already "wasted" time on this week?
4. What are THREE practical things you can do differently to better manage your time this semester?
yes, I can say that I spend most of my time doing things that are important to me, like balancing my personal like and my academic life and making sure that I'm not devoting too much time to my personal life. It is important for me to spend time on these two things because they both give me balance and are beneficial to my future.
ReplyDeleteYes, both of these things hep me accomplish my goals doing my work secures my future while being social secures my sanity.
Yes, there are things that have contributed to my time wasting for example watching tv.
three things i can do to manage my time are to make a schedule set goals and remember whats more important temporary satisfaction or longer term
1) This week has been the most productive week I have had so far this semester. I know that we are in week 4 and things are only going to progress from now. So I made a weekly chart on what I need to do (for school) and then another one for anything aside from my school life. The most important aspect that I need to look into is that midterms are coming up in few weeks. By making a weekly chart, I am more organized with my upcoming assignments and things-to-do-list is assisting me on what I need to do by all my deadlines.
Delete2) I spend most of my work doing in my room. Although, it helps me to get out of my comfort zone here and there to go to a coffee shop or a library where everyone is determine to do whatever they are doing. Its also nice to meet up with a friend from class to do work together. I like to switch it up and mix it up in order to stay focus and not lose interest in doing what I should be doing.
3) I rarely watch tv but i do spend a lot of time on the computer. but that includes reading news on the internet. so maybe instead of reading articles online, i can go back and read newspaper just so i can switch the mood and not so be attach to my computer 24-7.
4) 3 Practical things I can do differently to better manage my time this semester:
a. Keep up with my weekly assignments by using my "to-do-list" on my phone application. Its convenient and right there in my hand!
b. If teacher's are letting us do "redo" project, or any extrea credit, I'm taking an advantage of them!
c. Keep a healthy mind and body by exercising and eating the right way to maintain my sanity.
1. For the most part, yes, however this week i seem to have gotten a bit off track. I recently bought a weekly planner so I could plan out my assignments rather than doing them the night before. Until this last week I had been spacing things out well, but this week I have gotten side tracked and run into too many distractions (i.e. running into friends and being persuaded to hang out for a bit rather than heading home to finish up assignments. It is hard for me to determine what is most important to me lately. Naturally, school is number one, followed by finding a steady job (rather than free lance work), then the few freelance jobs I have, and lastly my personal art which I try to mix with my social life as much as possible so I can find people who like to go out and create things to do rather than sitting around trying to think of ways to spend money to do things that we could put together ourselves.
ReplyDelete2. I spend the majority of my time walking/bussing around, so to an extent yes, it does help me accomplish my goals, however it makes me feel rushed at times. I am slowly learning how to manage my time and route schedules so I get the most accomplished in a day.
3. My number one time waster is hanging out with people who don't do anything, and slowly I am cutting those types of people out of my life. Slowly, I am cutting down on wasting time.
4. a) Keep to my self-determined schedule of completing assignments and do them to the best of my ability, redoing them as many times as needed until i get them right.
b) Spend my time on positive activities (i.e. personal projects, exercise, meditation) which help my creative flow.
c) Make sure I don't get side tracked (unless time permits it). I need to make sure I focus on what it is I have set for a day's agenda. If I have room for a side adventure, that is great, but I should not be attached to having one every day.
d) I need to keep a better sleep schedule. Go to bed at a decent time (11pm ish) so I can get up at a decent time in the morning (9-9:30)
first off, the add comment button isn't working, so I'm just replying off Nico's. anyways
Delete1:I am spending alot more time this semester working towards my goal. I'm drawing alot more, and I'm happy about that.
2:most of my time is spent in the labs at 180 New Montgomery. It's been working towards class ^_^
3: My biggest time wasters are the internet and video games. I still put alot of time into it, but it's been managed more effictively so that I've been getting work done on time and such.
4: a:spend more time drawing for class projects as opposed to just recreationally
b:go to sleep and wake up at more reasonable hours.
c:don't go and do fun stuff or distractions till after I've finished my more important goals.
1. The single most important thing to me is music right now, that’s obvious. This is the one interest that connects all of my other interests, and the one that I hope I can use to earn a living eventually. I spent 10 hours in the lab on Wednesday to do classwork, but also to just become accustomed to the programs as swiftly and as thoroughly as I can. There is a saying: The more you practice in peace time, the less you bleed in war time. War time being in class or on the job.
ReplyDelete2. I’d say definitely yes. In the short term the labs are where I need to be outside of class, and in the long run what I learn about these programs will be used endlessly throughout my career, even should new programs be designed. I will at least be grounded in the predecessors.
There’s more to music than just programming however. Where I am going to find inspiration for songs is another chronic issue. In the question below I’ve actually realized where I can be using my time to solve this matter.
3. Ugh –waiting for shuttles, waiting for class to start when I arrive an hour in advance, waiting while I’m being driven back home on the weekends and then back to SF when the weekend is over –there is so much waiting in my average week! These are all moments when I could be researching something interesting to compose a song about. I cannot cut these waiting moments out of my schedule, but after being disgusted with all this time wasted waiting, I’ve vowed to have a book prepared for these moments so I’m never idly staring off into space. This also helps with my personal, un-work related goal of catching up with my book list.
Other things that could potentially become a time waster are all these kids I know from back home in Tracy. They all want to hang out, or live at my dorm for a weekend and I’m gonna have to start saying no a lot, to the point of rudeness. Yet I really feel my work is more important and they have to realize this.
4. Firstly, I need to stop getting in fights with my mom. Seriously, that can consume a lot of time. My persuasive skills are catching up with this dilemma though.
Secondly, I must stop mixing my personal studies with class homework, because I notice that I may neglect to include the parameters set by the teacher on a certain project if I’m too excited about what I want to do. Consequently I have to go back and clean up my work a lot. Focusing on the task at hand and getting it done first is my new mini goal this week.
Thirdly, I just need to get a good night’s rest when I have the opportunity to do so. Insomnia is an off and on issue with me, but I think I’m figuring out better how to trigger those melatonin makers.
1. Since I live in a small, boring town, there are few things for me to do, I mostly spend my time socializing, which is important to me, and I put some time into my photo assignments. while my town is boring, it does have some beautiful secenery, which makes for some great shots.
ReplyDelete2.i spend a lot of my time in my media room in my house, which is where i get most of my work done, but there can be a lot of distractions. in the short term, it can help a bit, but in the long term, it will be a great help.
3. Video Games, definitely. This week, the new Twisted Metal came out, and I've been sick all week, which is why i missed last class. also this week, I broke up with my girlfriend of almost a year, which has left me depressed and kinda sad. but i would not count that as "wasted" time though. Twisted Metal's mindless destruction has helped get through it a bit.
4.a: cut down on video games and focus on my academics
b: cut down on socializing and get my priorities straight.
c: get a job and get a steady income
1)
ReplyDeleteThis semester, I'm spending time on my works more and attending to workshops or going to extra classes to get the best credit as I could. I think this is the most important thing I should do and I'm actually improving. However, I also spend times meeting friends like socializing which is also important.
2)
I mostly spend my time in my room/ dorm. That's the place where all my art works are there and sometime I go to workshops to do my extra works to be done.
3)
Definitely surfing internet/ using computer and sleeping. Well, I wake up really late if I don't have classes and on weekends. If I could have wake up earlier, I could have done some other things finished and there will be more times for the day. Also I spend too much time on computers, just playing so I mostly get to do homework at late night.
4)
1. Try to wake up earlier since I'm used to sleep really late and I wake up late. I will try my best to wake up at least 2 hours earlier.
2. Do only one things. whether that is a homework or others try to finish one thing first than off to other one.
3. don't get lazy on weekends.
1.I've realized lately, especially this passed week that the things I am spending a lot of my time doing are not very important to me, and are actually pushing me further away from my goals. I spend ALOT of time with my friends. I think its healthy to spend time with friends and have fun, but I am realizing more and more how excessive it is becoming.
ReplyDelete2. No not, really. I think that I need to spend more of my time on school. and less time with friends. the solution seems simple. but its harder to execute it then I thought..
3. Well this passed week has had a lot of wasted time. I set aside time three separate times this week so I could work on homework, and each time I was distracted and ended up doing something else and said to myself "oh I still have time later this week..." I have went out drinking with my friends 4 nights in a row. which is bad I know. not only does this take away from potential homework time it causes me to be out late at night, even though I have work at 6 am every day. so then I start my day tired. and the cycle begins...
4. I bought a planner at the beggining of the semester, and I think it has been helping me organize my assignments and due dates, but I think I should try to spend more time at school in the library or in workshops so i can do my homework then and there and cant be distracted by anything, or anyone. I can also just cut out seeing my friends EVERYDAY. that would really help, even though that will be tough.
1. I'd say that Im spending time roughly evenly between improtant and unimportant things currently. Id say around 50-50 or maybe 60-40 in favor of Important things. This is a huge improvement last semester, where I would only spend the bare minimum amount of time required on important things. Whats most important to me right now is my schoolwork. and doing the best job that I can on all of it. Not just the things I enjoy, but all of it. Because it allows me to get better grades, and possibly more sleep.
ReplyDelete2. Well, since Im about even right now in how I spend my time (I dont count sleep either way), I would say yes, for the most part where I spend the majority of my time helps me accomplish my goals. Both short and long term goals, seeing as in most cases right now, the two are related.
3. Yes, there are most certainly things that I could cut from my schedule, as they waste time. Most prominently are: Reading books unrelated to school, Video Games, and watching movies. And maybe not spending an hour and a half eating one meal. Pretty much what I just listed above is what I wasted my time on this week, I worked a bit more this week on my schoolwork then I have in the past though, and Im hoping to keep this as the new standard now.
4.Three things are:
a. Go to sleep at a reasonable time (or at all).
b. Take less time eating meals.
c. Stopping catching the latest bus to class, so Im always 100% Ill be on time (in case the bus's dont show up on time or at all again...
1. Half of my weekdays usually consist of going to school and doing homework when I get home because i like to have free weekends without having to worry about deadlines. I try to knock out as much as I can before Saturday so that I don't have anything bothering me the rest of the week. I think it's important for me to finish my work earlier because I still feel like I'm in work mode when I get home from school, whereas on the weekends I tend to procrastinate because, in my mind, the weekend is some time off for me to relax rather than worry about deadlines.
ReplyDelete2. Yes, I definitely feel like I'm being more productive with my time by doing my assignments as soon as possible. Meeting deadlines is the main thing I need to work on and so far I've been doing fine. If I keep this up I will be able to meet my goals.
My habits are helping me keep up my grades and getting me into a more organized work flow.
3. Checking social media sites a million times a day, going out with people, and playing xbox are my big three time wasters. I've been cutting down on each of them lately so this week hasn't been a problem. But doing an excessive amount of NOTHING has been a pretty bad habit for me before.
4. I could make better use of my time by writing down due dates on my calendar so that I have a better idea of when it's okay to go hang out or not. I could also stop worrying about what some stupid people (my "friends") on facebook are up to. And finally, I could start going to bed at reasonable hours so that I don't feel drained the next day.
I feel that I am spending more time on the weekdays doing what I feel and most needed. I mainly spend my time on relaxation, homework, and maintaining a healthy social life. By saying "healthy" social life I mean being around a few close people with the same aspirations and ambition I have. Strictly positive energy.
ReplyDeleteWhere I spend my time definitely help me accomplish my goals short and long term. The short term benefits consist of myself and positive people igniting the fuel for Jamie to do well. Long term consist of networking with all the right people.
There may be a few things on my schedule that you could absolutely say are time wasters. One recent time waster I've come face to face with is Netflix. In a funny way, its become mad addicting. I don't see it as a huge obstacle to shave off the amount of time I use screwing around with it. Otherwise, no major wasters are creating diversion.
The three practical things I must do to manage success are complete work, create meaningful work, and do well in school grade wise.
1. during the week i am spending most of the time ether at work, or at school. mon-sun, i usually work 5-6 days. i got to school 3 days. so my week is always full. and when i have time during those, I'm working on homework, going out and hanging out with my friends, and also spending time with my two sisters and their families. along with many other things. yeah i believe those are very important tasks. most important to me would have to be school, work, family, friends, and my career as a graphic designer (working on some side things and working to get a intern) and not in that order. the order would always be different. it changes as the weeks go by, some times other are just a lil more important, and sometimes it takes a back seat. but those are deff the most important ones. its important because with out those, my life wouldn't be where it is right now.
ReplyDelete2. yes it does, and yes both long and short
3. i don't believe any of those things that i listed would be time wasters. because many people would consider going and and having a good time with your friends a waste. i but i don't believe. everyone needs to get out and relieve stress sometimes. you need it to keep you sane.
4. well working less is not a option, i need the financial income, maybe the amount of time i choose to go out, and maybe the times i go to sleep because that also affects my work habit and ethics
1. Are you spending the most time during the week on things that are important to you? What is most important to you? Why is it
ReplyDeleteimportant to spend time on this?
- Yes, I'm trying my best to focus on school. before I would just be lazy and stay home but anything that's school related, I'll make sure I won't miss it. school is the most important thing at the moment because I wanna be successful in the future and I want to make sure myself isn't behind.
2. Does where you spend the majority of your time help you to accomplish your goals? Both your short term and long term?
- Yes, it helps me to accomplish my goals in both ways. no more missing homework assignments and I'll make sure I turn everything by the deadlines.
3. Are there things that you can cut out of your schedule that you would consider time wasters? What are some things you have already "wasted" time on this week?
- Probably Facebook, watching shows/dramas online, etc. I'm going to try to go on Facebook less. it's so bad how it's really addicting since people keep posting stuff up constantly and you don't want to miss out on what's going on
4. What are THREE practical things you can do differently to better manage your time this semester?
1. focus on myself rather than other things
2. less internet
3. no drinking during weekdays (no hangover = more time to do stuff)
